In October 1986, four-year-old Daniel had leukaemia.

The little boy needed medicine every three hours, and his chemotherapy treatment had stopped. Daniel wasn’t expected to live until Christmas - his favourite time of year. It wasn’t fair that his family couldn’t celebrate one last time.

Then Daniel made a wish – to have Christmas in October.

On October 31, 1986, Santa and a helper elf arrived at Daniel’s Onehunga home in a fire engine packed with gifts.

Daniel unwrapped his gifts under the Christmas tree, spent time with Santa and the elf, and even had a ride in the fire truck!

Daniel’s wish was magical. It created beautiful memories for Daniel’s family to look back on – one last meaningful celebration, with their beloved boy.

Even though it’s been nearly 40 years since Daniel’s wish came true, his mum Elaine can still remember the day so vividly. “It was magical. It really was. You sort of stopped thinking about what’s happening. It was amazing to see him smile, even though he was tired. It was just a beautiful, beautiful few hours.

Devastatingly, Daniel passed away seven days after Christmas in October - November 6, 1986.

Christmas in October started a Kiwi movement. Now help other sick Kiwi kids.

After being diagnosed with a brain tumour the size of a peach, Braxton (8) underwent over ten weeks of painful procedures. Now that he's better again, Braxton wishes for a gaming PC with a curved monitor and headphones.

11-year-old Izzy has stage four cancer, which has turned her world upside down. After enduring countless chemo and radiation treatments, Izzy still has two years of maintenance chemo ahead. Her wish is for a pomeranian puppy.
